The PPP Cosmic 40mm f4 takes an iconic lens from the 1970s, the Russian Cosmic Symbol, and breathes new life into this forgotten gem. Each lens conversion is reconstructed by hand with every single component taken apart, cleaned, new custom components fitted, regreased, and recalibrated to perfection. Each of these 10 limited edition lenses has been hand-calibrated specifically for Leica M-mount, and includes a custom 40mm PPP viewfinder and gift box made specifically for this lens.
This classic optical design allows you to capture an iconic swirl on the outer edges of the background bokeh when wide open at ƒ4. Combine this simple triplet design with film or digital and watch as the vintage glass renders your subject beautifully. You may be surprised at what you are able to achieve with this fully-calibrated 1970s Russian lens.
The PPP Cosmic 40mm f4 lens is based on the Cosmic Symbol with a few extra 3d printed parts created in house to achieve the best experience when using on the Leica M and other mirrorless cameras. The reason this lens was converted was not only for its iconic characteristics produced by the optics of the T-43 40mm f4 cosmic symbol provides. This lens was also chosen for conversion as I started to come across a lot of these cameras with damage to the main body due to the main material being used Bakelite. Bakelite was used for a lot of affordable cameras during this era and although its great with age it can become very brittle causing cracks across the entire body. Although a lot of the Cosmic symbols I came across had some form of damage to the chassis causing the camera to become unusable, the lens was in great condition both physically and optically due to the materials for the lens housing being created form metal.
The view finder has been created by salvaging the optical finder block from the cosmic symbol as well to help recycle as much of the broken cameras as possible. this is also why we only produce small runs of 10 conversions to recycle the broken cameras rather than sourcing perfectly working cameras to create lens conversions.
